Discover more about Independence Arch

The Independence Arch, a prominent landmark in Bridgetown, Barbados, stands as a tribute to the nation's independence and cultural identity. Built in 1987 to mark the 21st anniversary of Barbados' independence, the arch is strategically positioned at the southern end of the Chamberlain Bridge, serving as a gateway to the capital city's historic heart. The arch's design incorporates several national emblems, each carrying significant meaning. The pillars showcase the flying fish and pelican, important national symbols, along with the Pride of Barbados flower. The island's Coat of Arms, bearing the motto 'Pride and Industry', crowns the arch. At the base, the National Pledge is inscribed. During November, the month of Barbados' independence celebrations, the arch is illuminated in the national colors of blue and gold. The Chamberlain Bridge, where the arch is located, also holds historical significance. Originally constructed as a swing bridge in 1872 and named after Joseph Chamberlain, a British Colonial Secretary, it was rebuilt as a lifting bridge in 2005-2006. The bridge crosses the Careenage, a marine inlet that was once the hub of Bridgetown's mercantile activity. Together, the Independence Arch and Chamberlain Bridge symbolize Barbados' history, resilience, and national pride.
