Discover more about Réserve naturelle nationale de la Pointe de Givet

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la Pointe de Givet, or Givet Point National Nature Reserve, is a protected area located at the northernmost point of the Ardennes department in France, bordering Belgium. Established on March 4, 1999, the reserve spans 354 hectares across 11 separate sites. These sites are located within the communes of Charnois, Chooz, Foisches, Fromelennes, Givet, and Rancennes. The reserve is known for its diverse landscapes, including forests, heathlands, dry grasslands, and spectacular rocky cliffs. This variety supports a rich biodiversity, with 454 botanical species and 320 animal species identified within the reserve. The area's unique geology is also a significant feature, with limestone, shales, sandstones and fossils. The Meuse valley cuts deeply into the limestone, and the area is where Jules Gosselet defined the Givétien stratotype in 1879. The Pointe de Givet has been recognized by naturalists since the 19th century for its geological riches and flora. The association "La Valenne" initiated the process to classify the area as a national nature reserve in 1990 to protect its deteriorating heritage. Today, marked trails allow visitors to explore the reserve's natural beauty, with guided thematic tours offered annually by the Conservatory of Natural Areas of Champagne-Ardenne. Visitors may observe orchids, snakes and eagle owls.
