Discover more about Oostkerk, Middelburg

The Oostkerk, or East Church, is a prominent feature of Middelburg's skyline, distinguished by its unique octagonal shape and baroque dome. Constructed from 1648 to 1667, this Protestant church marked a significant shift in religious architecture following the Reformation. It was the first church in Middelburg built specifically for Protestant services. The church's design is a blend of Dutch classicism with baroque influences. The original plans included a columned porch, but the final design incorporated two smaller entrances and windows flanking the main entrance. The dome, topped with a lantern instead of a traditional bell tower, is a defining characteristic. Inside, the church features a white organ built in 1782 and two stained glass windows dating back to 1664. After serving as a church for many years, the last religious service was held on January 6, 2017. Today, the Oostkerk has been repurposed into a cultural hub, hosting a variety of events, including concerts, exhibitions, and lectures. Its unique acoustics and historical ambiance make it an ideal venue for cultural activities. Visitors can also take guided tours to learn more about the church's history and architecture. A recent photo exhibition showcased Zeeland through the lens of photographer Jeroen Hofman.
