Discover more about Markt

The Markt, also known as the Market Square or Grote Markt, has been the beating heart of Bruges since the 10th century. This lively square, covering approximately 2.5 acres, has evolved from a marketplace and fairground to a central gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Dominating the square is the iconic Belfry, an 83-meter-high medieval bell tower offering panoramic city views. The Provincial Court, originally built as a Waterhall for unloading goods, stands on the east side, showcasing neo-Gothic architecture. Colorful, traditional Flemish guild houses with step-gabled facades line the north side of the Markt. Throughout history, the Markt has hosted significant events, including tournaments, festivals, and even public executions. Today, the square is largely traffic-free and hosts a weekly market every Wednesday morning, a Christmas Market, and various concerts and events. The Markt is also home to a statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter de Coninck, local heroes of the 1302 resistance movement. The Markt provides access to several attractions, including the Historium, the Bruges Beer Experience, and the Belfry. Horse-drawn carriages offer a charming way to tour the city from the square.
