Discover more about Belfry of Bruges

Rising 83 meters above the Markt (Market Square), the Belfry of Bruges is a testament to the city's medieval power and architectural prowess. Constructed in stages between the 13th and 15th centuries, this iconic bell tower has served as a watchtower, treasury, archive, and a symbol of civic pride. Originally built around 1240, the belfry replaced an earlier wooden structure. After a fire in 1280, the tower was rebuilt, and in the late 15th century, the octagonal upper stage was added. A wooden spire, crowned with a statue of Saint Michael, topped the tower but was destroyed by lightning in 1493. The spire was rebuilt, only to be lost again to fire in 1741, giving the belfry its current silhouette. Inside, a narrow staircase of 366 steps leads to the top, passing various rooms, including the treasury, the drum room, the tower room, and the bell room. The carillon, consisting of 47 bells, still rings regularly, adding to the city's charm. The climb rewards visitors with panoramic views of Bruges and its surroundings.
