Discover more about Music Center De Bijloke

Music Center De Bijloke stands as a remarkable testament to Ghent's rich history and vibrant cultural scene. Originally founded in the early 13th century as a hospital, the site evolved over centuries, incorporating a Cistercian abbey and later serving as a teaching hospital for Ghent University. In the late 20th century, the complex was repurposed into a cultural hub, with the centerpiece being the concert hall within the former infirmary. The concert hall itself is an architectural marvel, seamlessly blending the ancient Gothic hall with modern design elements. A major renovation completed in 2020 enhanced the hall's acoustics, visibility and comfort, creating a world-class venue for musical performances. The hall seats 720, with an additional 110 choir stall seats offering excellent views. The café and foyer areas feature contemporary and ecological designs, with a historical chapel serving as a cloakroom. De Bijloke's program is diverse, featuring classical, early, jazz, and contemporary music, as well as cross-disciplinary collaborations with theatre, film, and children's shows. The center is also known for hosting the Gent Jazz Festival. Beyond concerts, De Bijloke offers facilities for conferences, meetings, and other events, making it a versatile space for cultural and corporate gatherings.
