    Discover more about Oostkerk, Middelburg

The Oostkerk, or East Church, is a defining landmark in Middelburg, Netherlands, celebrated for its unique octagonal shape and baroque dome. Constructed between 1648 and 1667, the church was commissioned to serve the growing Protestant population in the eastern part of the city. Its construction marked a significant moment in Middelburg's history, reflecting the shift in religious dominance following the Reformation. The church's design is a blend of Dutch classicism and baroque influences. Several architects contributed to its creation, including Bartholomeus Drijfhout, Pieter Post, and Arent van 's-Gravesande. The foundation is built with Zeeland bricks, while Utrecht bricks were used for the remaining construction. The interior once housed a white organ built in 1782 and two stained glass windows from 1664. After serving as a Protestant church for over 350 years, the Oostkerk held its last religious service in January 2017. Today, the Oostkerk has been repurposed as a cultural venue, hosting concerts, lectures, exhibitions, and literary gatherings. Visitors can explore the architectural splendor of the building, including its timber dome constructed using shipbuilding techniques. The lantern in the cupola can be illuminated in a color of choice, allowing visitors to contribute to the upkeep of this historic landmark.
