Car
If you're driving, take the George Price Highway (Western Highway) from Belize City. Continue on the highway for approximately 30 miles (48 km) until you reach the junction for the Hummingbird Highway. Turn left onto the Hummingbird Highway and continue for about 10 miles (16 km) until you reach the village of Orange Walk. From Orange Walk, follow the signs for the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve. You will need to drive to the village of San Felipe, and from there, continue on a dirt road that leads to the reserve. Note that the road can be rough and may require a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Total travel time is about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
To reach Lamanai by public transport, start by taking a bus from Belize City to Orange Walk. Buses leave from the Belize City bus terminal and the fare is around BZD 7-10. Once in Orange Walk, you can either take a taxi or arrange for a tour that includes transportation to Lamanai. Taxis may cost approximately BZD 30-50. If you choose to take a tour, make sure to book in advance, as some tours include boat rides to the archaeological site, which is an additional cost (typically around BZD 100-150). The entire journey may take around 3-4 hours depending on connections.
Boat
For those seeking a more scenic route, you can also reach Lamanai by taking a boat from Orange Walk. After arriving in Orange Walk, you can hire a boat tour that will take you along the New River to Lamanai. The boat ride offers beautiful views of the surrounding wildlife and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. The cost for a boat tour is usually around BZD 100-150 per person. Be sure to arrange your boat tour in advance and confirm the schedule.
