Getting There

  • Car

    From Caracol, head east on the road leading out of the archaeological site. Continue along the road for approximately 12 kilometers until you reach the junction at the Western Highway (Hummingbird Highway). Turn right onto the Western Highway and continue for about 8 kilometers. Watch for signs to Rio Frio Cave; you will turn left onto a smaller road that leads directly to the cave entrance, which is well-marked. There is no entrance fee for the cave itself, but parking may have a small fee, so keep some cash on hand.

  • Public Transportation

    While public transportation options may be limited, you can take a bus from the nearest town, San Ignacio. From San Ignacio, catch a bus heading towards the Western Highway. Inform the driver you want to get off at the junction for Rio Frio Cave. Once you arrive at the junction, it is about a 2-kilometer walk to the cave entrance. Make sure to ask locals for directions if you're unsure. Note that this method may require flexibility with timing, as buses may not run frequently.
