Discover more about Mile

The archaeological site of Mile, situated in the Visoko basin near the present-day village of Arnautovići, holds a prominent place in Bosnian history as the crowning and burial church of Bosnian kings during the Banate and later Kingdom, from 1340 to 1463. Mile's historical significance is deeply intertwined with the medieval Bosnian state, serving as one of the kingdom's royal seats. The site was first mentioned in written records in 1244 as the location of the Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian. In 1340, Stephen II Kotromanić established the first Franciscan friary of Saint Nicholas here. Mile gained prominence as the coronation site, beginning with the crowning of Tvrtko I Kotromanić as the first Bosnian king in 1377. The assemblies, known as Stanak, of Bosnian nobility were held here to address internal and foreign policy matters. Archaeological excavations have been ongoing since the early 20th century. The grave of King Tvrtko I has been identified in the north wall of the church. The remains of brocade fabric with coat of arms motifs were discovered within his tomb. While the grave of Stephen II, who died in 1353, has not been identified, historical accounts suggest he built a church in Mile and wished to be buried there. Today, Mile is a protected national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, preserving its historical legacy for future generations.
