Discover more about Vječna vatra

Vječna vatra, meaning Eternal Flame, is a solemn and significant war memorial located in the heart of Sarajevo. It stands as a tribute to the military and civilian victims of World War II. The memorial was first unveiled on April 6, 1946, marking the first anniversary of Sarajevo's liberation from Nazi Germany and the fascist Independent State of Croatia. The eternal flame, encased in a circular stone structure, represents the unyielding spirit and resilience of the people of Sarajevo throughout their turbulent history. The monument is comprised of tiles inscribed with text in the colors of the former Yugoslavia. The flame is fueled by natural gas and housed in a copper receptacle shaped like a wreath of bay leaves. Located at the intersection of Mula Mustafa Bašeskije, Titova, and Ferhadija streets, the Vječna vatra is a popular gathering spot for both locals and tourists. It provides a space for quiet contemplation and reflection on the sacrifices made during the war. The memorial is often adorned with flowers and notes left by visitors, demonstrating the deep emotional connection many people have with this site. While the flame has burned almost continuously since its creation, it was extinguished during the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1995, a period that deeply marked the city's history. Today, the Vječna vatra stands as a beacon of hope for future generations, reminding us of the importance of peace and unity.
