Discover more about Ali Pasha's Mosque

Ali Pasha's Mosque, or Alipašina džamija, is a stunning testament to Ottoman architectural mastery in Sarajevo. Constructed in 1560-61 as a vakıf (endowment) by Sofu Hadım Ali Pasha, a prominent Ottoman statesman, the mosque has stood for centuries as a place of worship and a symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage. The mosque's design embodies the classical Ottoman style, featuring a central dome covering the prayer area and three smaller domes adorning the cloister. Its elegant proportions are considered among the finest examples of Ottoman-era mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The complex includes a tranquil courtyard containing Ali Pasha's tomb and the final resting places of other notable Bosnians. Gravestones of dervishes who were part of Sultan Mehmed II's entourage were moved here, marking some of the oldest Ottoman monuments in Sarajevo. Heavily damaged during the Bosnian War, particularly its dome, the mosque underwent a meticulous restoration in 2004. In January 2005, it was designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ensuring its preservation for future generations. A visit offers a chance to appreciate the delicate arches, the soaring minaret, and the serene atmosphere that permeates this historical treasure. The surrounding park, with its well-designed horticultural features, provides a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city.
