Discover more about Perućica Primeval Forest

Perućica Primeval Forest, often called the 'Lungs of Europe,' offers a rare glimpse into an untouched ecosystem. Located within Sutjeska National Park, the oldest and largest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it stands as one of the last two remaining primeval forests on the continent. The forest's age is estimated at around 20,000 years, predating the Ice Age, and it has been under strict protection for decades. Covering 1,434 hectares, Perućica showcases a remarkable diversity of plant life, with over 170 species of trees and shrubs and over 1,000 species of herbaceous plants. Some trees tower over 50 meters, with the tallest measured spruce reaching 63 meters. The forest is also home to a rich variety of animal life, including invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, fish, 36 species and 18 families of mammals, and numerous bird species. Rare and endangered species like the wildcat and lynx find refuge here. At the heart of Perućica lies the stunning Skakavac Waterfall, plunging more than 70 meters down a cliff. The forest operates under a strict nature reserve scheme, meaning natural processes are undisturbed. New life flourishes on the remains of trees that die naturally. Access to Perućica is only permitted with a certified guide from the National Park, ensuring the preservation of this invaluable natural treasure. However, the panoramic viewpoints of Beškita and Dragoš Sedlo can be visited independently, offering breathtaking views of the forest and waterfall.
