Discover more about Colina Kapa

Colina Kapa, perched atop Mount Trebević, provides arguably the most complete panoramic view of Sarajevo. This vantage point's strategic importance has long been recognized. During the Austro-Hungarian era, a military fortification called Bistrik Kula was erected here to oversee the city. After World War II, the site was repurposed into the Čolina Kapa Observatory, complete with multiple domes and advanced equipment, becoming the only astronomical observatory of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina by 1972. Sadly, the Bosnian War in the 1990s brought devastation to the area. The observatory was destroyed, and its remnants stand today as a reminder of Sarajevo's resilience and lost scientific potential. Despite its derelict state, Colina Kapa remains a popular destination for hikers and urban explorers, drawn to its historical significance and stunning views. There are ongoing efforts to restore the observatory and revive astronomy in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visitors can reach Colina Kapa via the Sarajevo Cable Car, which whisks you up Trebević Mountain, followed by a walk. The area also offers opportunities to explore the remains of the Olympic bobsled track from the 1984 Winter Olympics, adding another layer of interest to the trip.
