Originally built in the 9th century, the walls were expanded and strengthened over centuries, reaching their present form in the 13th-17th centuries. These walls, stretching 1,940 meters, encircle the Old Town, offering a unique journey through time. The design of the walls dates back to 1292, with major construction from the 15th to 16th centuries during Dubrovnik's Golden Age. The walls feature a complex system of towers, forts, and bastions, including the iconic Minčeta Tower, Revelin Fortress, and St. John's Fortress. The robust construction withstood the devastating 1667 earthquake, a testament to their enduring strength. The walls are 4 to 6 meters thick on the land side and 1.5 to 3 meters on the sea side, reaching up to 25 meters in height. Originally, the walls were built using seaweed, eggshells, and sand as mortar with limestone from a nearby quarry. The main entrances are Pile Gate, Ploče Gate, and St. John's Fortress.
