Discover more about Široka ul.

Široka ulica, meaning "Broad Street," is a unique and historically significant street located in the heart of Dubrovnik's Old Town. Unlike the other streets within the city walls, which adhere to a strictly defined, narrow width dictated by the statutes of the Republic of Dubrovnik, Široka ulica is noticeably wider, approximately three times the standard width. This deviation from the norm has a practical origin. Široka Street was intentionally designed to be wider to provide quick and easy access to the granary building, a crucial facility for the city's grain storage and distribution, especially during sieges and times of scarcity in the Middle Ages. The Rupe Ethnographic Museum, formerly a granary, is located nearby. The street's width facilitated the efficient transport of grain to and from the granary. Today, Široka Street is a bustling thoroughfare lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops. While it has transformed into a commercial hub, it still retains its historical charm and offers visitors a glimpse into Dubrovnik's rich past. At the end of Široka Street is the Domino Church, built in 1452. The street also provides access to the House of Marin Držić, a museum dedicated to the famous Dubrovnik playwright. Exploring Široka Street allows visitors to appreciate the blend of history and modern life within Dubrovnik's iconic Old Town.
