Continue to Masunga village, then follow local signs to Domboshaba Ruins, which is a few kilometers away. The drive takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes.     The Domboshaba Ruins, located near Masunga in northeastern Botswana, are a significant cultural and heritage site. Originally occupied towards the end of the Great Zimbabwe period (1250–1450 AD), the ruins provide insight into the ancient Kalanga Kingdom and its connection to the Great Zimbabwe civilization. The name 'Domboshaba' translates to 'trading hill,' reflecting its historical importance as a center for trade and administration.Visitors can explore the remains of this once-thriving settlement, including impressive dry-stone walls that form private enclosures on the hilltop. These walls, averaging 1.8 meters in height, showcase the architectural sophistication of the time. The site also features the foundations of huts, indicated by visible 'dakha' (clay) floors. Artifacts discovered at the ruins, such as gold, copper, ivory, and porcelain, suggest extensive trade links with regions as far as China and India. While many of these artifacts are now housed in the National Museum in Gaborone for preservation, the ruins themselves offer a tangible connection to the past.The site is considered a respected place by the local communities, with beliefs that the chief resided on the hilltop with his advisors, while his wives and family lived in the lower areas.
