Mokolodi Nature Reserve, a jewel of Botswana's natural heritage, offers a convenient escape into the wild just 10 kilometers south of Gaborone. Founded in 1994 by the Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation, this not-for-profit game reserve spans 30 square kilometers of donated land, showcasing a diverse array of indigenous African wildlife. Originally cattle farmland, Mokolodi has been transformed into a thriving sanctuary for animals and plants endemic to southeastern Botswana, including some rare and endangered species. Visitors can encounter kudu, warthog, duiker, giraffe, steenbok, zebra, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, ostrich, impala, springbok, waterbuck, baboons, vervet monkeys, mountain reedbuck, eland, bushbuck, and even leopard. Mokolodi is also known for its successful white rhino reintroduction and breeding program. Mokolodi offers a variety of activities, including game drives, guided walks, horse-back safaris, rhino and giraffe tracking, and cheetah visits. The reserve also houses a reptile park and a wildlife sanctuary for disabled or orphaned animals. Facilities include camping sites, chalets, picnic sites, an education center, a museum and library, a conference center, and a restaurant with scenic views. Environmental education for Botswana's children is a major focus, with thousands of schoolchildren visiting each year for educational programs.
