Discover more about Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is a sprawling wilderness in the heart of Botswana, encompassing 52,800 square kilometers. Established in 1961, it initially served as a sanctuary for the San people, also known as Bushmen, who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Today, the CKGR offers a unique safari experience far removed from the bustling tourist routes of Africa. The landscape is characterized by seemingly endless horizons, flat grasslands, and dwarfed trees. Fossil riverbeds and salt pans dot the terrain, creating a stark yet beautiful environment. Deception Valley, in the north, is a highlight, attracting dense concentrations of herbivores after the rainy season. The CKGR is home to a remarkable array of wildlife adapted to the harsh, semi-arid conditions. Visitors can spot springbok, gemsbok, giraffe, and predators such as the black-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah, and brown hyena. Birdlife is also abundant, with over 200 species, including ostriches and various raptors. The best time for game viewing is during the rainy season (December to April) when the plains transform into verdant landscapes, attracting large herds of wildebeest and zebra. Visitors can also learn about the culture and traditions of the San people, who have a deep understanding of the Kalahari. Walks with San guides offer insights into their traditional way of life, including tracking animals, finding water, and harvesting edible plants. Accessing the CKGR requires careful planning and a 4x4 vehicle is essential. Self-drive visitors should be well-equipped and self-sufficient. Alternatively, visitors can book a tour with a reputable operator or fly directly to one of the camps within the reserve.
