Discover more about Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan National Park, established in 1970 and expanded in 1992, offers a unique safari experience centered around its expansive salt pans. These pans, remnants of the prehistoric Lake Makgadikgadi, transform into grassy plains after seasonal rains, attracting a remarkable concentration of wildlife. The park's name is believed to originate from a San word, 'Nxa,' referring to a hooked stick used for digging springhares, which the park's shape resembles. Nxai Pan's landscape is characterized by open grasslands dotted with acacia trees and mopane woodlands. The park is also home to the famous Baines' Baobabs, a group of seven ancient baobab trees that were immortalized in a painting by explorer Thomas Baines in 1862. These trees provide a striking landmark and a testament to the area's history. During the rainy season (November to April), Nxai Pan becomes a veritable Eden, attracting massive migrations of zebra, wildebeest, and gemsbok. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are drawn to the area, creating exceptional game-viewing opportunities. Birdlife also flourishes during this time. The park offers a tranquil safari experience with fewer visitors compared to other Botswana parks. Self-drive safaris are popular, allowing visitors to explore the pans and waterholes at their own pace. Travelers can also visit the Nxai Pan Camp, the only permanent camp inside the park, or stay at one of the two campsites: South Camp (with water) and Kudiakam Pan (no water).
