Getting There

  • Driving

    From Maun, take the A3 towards Nata. After approximately 160 kilometers, turn onto the Rakops road. Continue to Khumaga village. To reach the campsite, you'll need to cross the Boteti River via the Khumaga Ferry. Note that a 4x4 vehicle is required to use the ferry. The ferry crossing fee is approximately 180 BWP each way with a trailer. Park entrance fees are also applicable: 190 BWP per adult per day for SADC & Foreign Nationals, 95 BWP per child (8-17 years), and 75 BWP per vehicle.

  • Public Transport

    Limited public transport options are available. You can take a shared taxi or minibus from Maun to Xhumaga village. From there, hire a local taxi or arrange a 4x4 to reach the Khumaga entrance, approximately 20 kilometers away. Shared taxi fare from Maun to Xhumaga is approximately 50-100 BWP. Hiring a local taxi for the final 20 kilometers will cost an additional 150-300 BWP, depending on the vehicle and negotiation.

Khumaga Camp Sites provide an immersive experience within Botswana's Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Situated on the western bank of the Boteti River, the camp serves as a gateway to the vast salt pans and the diverse wildlife that congregates along the river. The campsite features ten generously spaced camping pitches, each equipped with a braai (barbecue) stand, a cold water tap, and a dustbin. Shared ablution blocks offer showers, basins, and toilets. While the borehole water supply can have a strong sulfur smell, it's advisable to bring drinking water. Limited basic food supplies are available in Khumaga village. Khumaga is renowned for the dramatic zebra migration, typically occurring during the dry season when tens of thousands of zebras move towards the river. Elephant sightings are also common, and various antelope species may wander through the campsite. Birdwatching is excellent, with opportunities to spot wattled cranes and other species. The Makgadikgadi Pans area holds a captivating folklore, with tales of early settlers lured by mirages of sparkling water, only to succumb to the harsh thirstlands. The park itself was established as a game reserve in 1970 and attained National Park status in 1992, encompassing approximately 4,900 square kilometers.
