Discover more about Nxai Pan

Nxai Pan National Park, situated north of the Maun-Nata road in Botswana, encompasses 2,578 sq km of the Makgadikgadi Pans. The park's defining features are its expansive salt pans, remnants of an ancient lake that dried up millennia ago. These pans include Nxai Pan, Kgama-Kgama Pan, and Kudiakam Pan. During the dry season, the landscape appears stark and seemingly desolate, characterized by shimmering mirages and flat grasslands dotted with acacia trees and baobabs. However, with the arrival of the rains (typically from November to April), Nxai Pan undergoes a remarkable transformation. The pans fill with water, attracting massive herds of zebra, wildebeest, and springbok from across the Kalahari. This migration, sometimes numbering up to 25,000 animals, is one of Africa's lesser-known spectacles. Wildlife thrives in Nxai Pan, with species including lion, cheetah, giraffe, kudu, impala, ostrich, jackal, bat-eared fox, and honey badger. The park is also known for its birdlife, especially during the wet season when migratory birds and flamingos flock to the area. A highlight of Nxai Pan is the cluster of millennia-old baobab trees known as Baines' Baobabs, named after explorer Thomas Baines who painted them in 1862. These trees stand as a testament to the area's history and offer a striking visual landmark. Visitors to Nxai Pan can enjoy game drives, bird watching, and guided walks. The park offers a tranquil safari experience with fewer crowds compared to other Botswana parks.
