Discover more about Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pans, located in the heart of northeastern Botswana, represent the remnants of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi, which once dwarfed Switzerland in size. Over millennia, tectonic shifts and climate change led to its evaporation, leaving behind a surreal landscape of expansive salt flats. The name 'Makgadikgadi' itself means 'vast, lifeless land' in the San language, a testament to its stark beauty. The Makgadikgadi Pans aren't just one single pan, but a collection of many, including the notable Sua (Sowa), Nwetwe, and Nxai Pans. These pans are separated by sandy desert, interspersed with grasslands and occasional vegetation. Kubu Island, a rocky outcrop adorned with ancient baobab trees, rises dramatically from the Sua Pan, holding historical and spiritual significance. Nxai Pan National Park, situated just north of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, features the iconic Baines' Baobabs, immortalized by the 19th-century painter Thomas Baines. During the dry season (May to October), the Makgadikgadi Pans present a dazzling lunar landscape, where the curvature of the earth is visible across the seemingly endless white surface. As the rains arrive between November and April, the pans undergo a magical transformation. Waterbirds, including flamingos, pelicans, ducks and geese, flock to the newly formed wetlands, while large herds of zebra and wildebeest migrate to graze on the fresh grasses. This transformation also draws predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, creating a dynamic ecosystem. Archaeological discoveries reveal that the Makgadikgadi region has been inhabited since the Early Stone Age, with evidence of prehistoric human settlements and tools. Today, the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park protects a portion of this unique environment, offering visitors a chance to experience its solitude, remoteness, and harsh beauty.
