Discover more about Nxai Pan National Park

Nxai Pan National Park, a part of the greater Makgadikgadi complex, presents a stark yet stunning contrast between arid desert and vibrant grassland. The park's 2,578 square kilometers encompass Nxai Pan, Kgama-Kgama Pan, and Kudiakam Pan, all remnants of ancient salt lakes. These pans transform dramatically with the rains, drawing massive herds of wildlife and offering incredible game viewing opportunities. During the dry season, the landscape is characterized by flat, dusty pans dotted with acacia trees and mopane woodlands. As the rains arrive (typically November to April), the pans fill with water and the surrounding grasslands flourish, attracting migrating herds of zebra, wildebeest, springbok, and gemsbok. This influx of herbivores also draws predators such as lion, cheetah, hyena, and jackal, creating a dynamic ecosystem. Birdlife is also abundant, with migrant species like flamingos and pelicans adding to the spectacle. One of the park's most iconic features is Baines' Baobabs, a group of seven giant baobab trees located on the edge of Kudiakam Pan. These trees were immortalized in a painting by Thomas Baines in 1862, and remarkably, they look almost identical today. A visit to these ancient sentinels is a must for any traveler to Nxai Pan. Nxai Pan offers a more secluded and tranquil safari experience compared to other parks in Botswana. Visitors can explore the park on self-drive safaris or guided game drives, taking in the vast landscapes and diverse wildlife. The park also provides opportunities for walking safaris led by San bushmen, offering insights into the local flora, fauna, and traditional uses of plants. Stargazing is exceptional due to the lack of light pollution.
