Discover more about Makadikadi Basin

The Makgadikgadi Basin, located in northeastern Botswana, near the border with Zimbabwe, is a mesmerizing expanse of salt flats that promises an unparalleled safari adventure. The basin, the size of Portugal, is what remains of the ancient Lake Makgadikgadi, which dried up tens of thousands of years ago. This area includes several individual pans such as Sowa, Nwetwe, and Nxai Pans. During the dry season (May to October), the Makgadikgadi Pans offer a stark, lunar-like landscape with seemingly endless horizons, ideal for quad biking and stargazing. The wet season (November to April) transforms the pans into a lush grassland, attracting massive migrations of zebra and wildebeest, as well as flamingos and other waterbirds. This migration is considered the second largest in Africa. Visitors can explore Baines' Baobabs in Nxai Pan National Park, a cluster of ancient baobab trees painted by the explorer Thomas Baines in 1862; the view remains unchanged today. Archaeological discoveries reveal prehistoric human presence with stone tools dating back before Homo sapiens. Several villages are situated on the fringes of the pans, including Mopipi, Mmatshumo, Nata, Gweta, and Rakops. The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, established in 1970 and enlarged in 1992, covers 4,900 square kilometers. Nxai Pan National Park is known for its distinctive features that attract safari enthusiasts. Activities range from game drives and walking safaris to meerkat encounters and cultural experiences with bushmen.
