Discover more about Nata Bird Sanctuary

Nata Bird Sanctuary, established in 1993, is a community-driven conservation project protecting 230 square kilometers of the northeastern Sowa Pan. The sanctuary's origins trace back to 1988 when the Nata Conservation Committee recognized the need to preserve the area's rich birdlife. Today, managed by the Kalahari Conservation Society with representatives from the local villages of Nata, Sepako, Maposa, and Manxotae, the sanctuary stands as a testament to successful community-based conservation. The sanctuary's landscape is dominated by the vast Sowa Pan, one of the three major salt pans within the Makgadikgadi Pans. During the rainy season (roughly November to March), the Nata River flows into the pan, attracting hundreds of thousands of waterbirds, including flamingos, pelicans, ducks, and geese. The sanctuary is one of only three nesting sites for flamingos in Africa and has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the largest breeding sites for both lesser and greater flamingos in the world.Even during the dry season (April to October), the sanctuary offers a unique experience. While the waters recede, the landscape transforms into a shimmering expanse of salt flats, offering stunning panoramic views. Wildlife, including antelopes like kudu, oryx, and springbok, as well as zebras, jackals, and hyenas, can be spotted in the surrounding grasslands. A raised wooden platform provides excellent vistas of the pan and its birdlife.Visitors can explore the sanctuary on self-drive trips, with well-maintained roads providing access to various viewpoints. However, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended during the rainy season due to the challenging black cotton soil. Accommodation options include camping near the entrance and the nearby Nata Lodge.
