Discover more about Nxai Pan

Nxai Pan National Park, located in northeastern Botswana, offers a unique safari experience centered around a vast, ancient salt flat. Part of the greater Makgadikgadi Pans, Nxai Pan itself is a fossil lakebed, approximately 40 square kilometers in size. The landscape is characterized by wide-open grasslands dotted with islands of acacia trees, creating a striking contrast against the shimmering horizon. During the rainy season (roughly November to April), Nxai Pan undergoes a dramatic transformation. The pans fill with water, and the area bursts into life as sweet grasses emerge. This attracts massive migrations of zebra and wildebeest, sometimes numbering over 25,000 animals, creating a spectacle rivaling the great migrations of East Africa. These herds, in turn, draw in predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, offering incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Birdlife also flourishes during this time, with flamingos, pelicans, and other migratory birds flocking to the shallow pools. Even in the dry season, Nxai Pan retains its stark beauty and offers rewarding wildlife encounters. Animals concentrate around artificial waterholes, providing excellent opportunities to observe elephants, giraffes, and various antelope species. The park is also home to the famous Baines' Baobabs, a group of ancient baobab trees immortalized by the artist Thomas Baines in 1862. These majestic trees stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time, offering a humbling reminder of the African wilderness.
