Discover more about Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve, a protected area in Botswana, lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta. It's a mosaic of ecosystems, where land and water meet, creating a haven for diverse wildlife. The reserve was established in 1963, named after Chief Moremi III, by the Batawana people, making it the first reserve in Africa to be founded by local residents concerned about the rapid depletion of wildlife in their ancestral lands. Moremi encompasses approximately 3,900 square kilometers, including the Moremi Tongue and Chief's Island, boasting a rich and diverse ecosystem. Here, you'll find all major herbivore and carnivore species naturally occurring in the region, as well as over 400 bird species. The varied terrain includes waterways, lagoons, pools, grasslands, and forests, making each drive inspiring. Wildlife roams freely between Moremi and the adjacent Chobe National Park. Moremi is home to a significant population of African wild dogs and is a sanctuary for the endangered white rhino, which has been reintroduced. Visitors can spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and various antelopes. Birdlife is abundant, with African fish eagles, crested cranes, and sacred ibis among the many species. Visitors can explore Moremi on game drives, guided walks, and mokoro excursions. The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to October) when animals congregate around water sources.
