Established in 1989, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a community-based wildlife project aimed at protecting Botswana's dwindling rhino population. Situated on 4,300 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for both black and white rhinos, as well as over 30 other animal species and 230 bird species.

Getting There

  • Driving

    Khama Rhino Sanctuary is located approximately 25 kilometers north of Serowe on the Serowe-Orapa road. From Serowe, take the road opposite the main mall and turn left at the T-junction with the Orapa road. The sanctuary is well-signposted. There is no fee to enter Serowe. The internal roads are gravel but well-maintained for self-drive game viewing. Vehicle fees are P200 for vehicles under 5 tonnes.

  • Public Transport

    From Gaborone, take a bus to Serowe. AT and T Monnakgotla operates a bus from Gaborone to Serowe twice daily for approximately $27. From Serowe, you will need to take a taxi or private transfer to the sanctuary, which is located 25km north of town. Expect to pay around P200-P300 for a taxi from Serowe to Khama Rhino Sanctuary.

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary, located 25km north of Serowe, is a testament to community-driven conservation efforts in Botswana. Founded in 1989, the sanctuary arose from concerns about escalating rhino poaching and the need to protect these endangered animals. Led by local residents and conservationists, the sanctuary was established to reintroduce rhinos to their former habitat and benefit the local community through tourism.The sanctuary's 4,300 hectares of Kalahari sandveld provide a diverse habitat for wildlife. The landscape includes Serwe Pan, a large grassy depression with natural waterholes, which attracts grazing animals like white rhinos. The southern part of the sanctuary features denser vegetation, favored by browsing animals such as black rhinos and giraffes.Visitors to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary can experience a variety of activities. Self-drive game viewing is popular, with well-maintained roads and signposts throughout the sanctuary. Guided game drives, nature walks, and rhino tracking are also available. The sanctuary also has an education center, campsites, chalets and a restaurant.The sanctuary has played a crucial role in rhino conservation in Botswana. The first white rhinos were introduced in 1992, followed by black rhinos in 2002. The sanctuary's success has led to the reintroduction of rhinos to other reserves in Botswana. The Botswana Defence Force constantly patrols the perimeter of the sanctuary.Khama Rhino Sanctuary is open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Entrance fees are P160 per adult per night. Vehicle fees are P200 for vehicles under 5 tonnes.
