Moremi Game Reserve: Botswana's Wildlife Paradise

Moremi Game Reserve, a jewel in Botswana's crown, lies on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta, covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers. Proclaimed a reserve in 1963, it holds the distinction of being the first wildlife sanctuary initiated by a local African tribe, the Batawana. The reserve is named after Chief Moremi III. His widow, Elizabeth Pulane Moremi, took steps to conserve the wildlife due to concerns about the impact of hunting on animal populations.Moremi's diverse ecosystems seamlessly merge, creating a haven for a striking number of wildlife species and birdlife. Visitors can explore mopane woodland, acacia forests, floodplains, and lagoons. Chief's Island, the largest island in the Okavango Delta, is within the reserve and is known for its concentration of wildlife.Moremi is home to over 300 of the world's remaining wild dog population and serves as a sanctuary for the endangered white rhino. The reserve is renowned for its game drives, landscapes, grasslands, and lush animal habitats in seasonally flooded plains.Poaching has been a concern in recent years, with significant losses of rhinos.
