Praça do Cruzeiro holds a special place in the history and culture of Brasília. Situated at one of the highest points in the city, at 1,172 meters above sea level, it was a prime location for observing the construction of Brasília in the late 1950s. The square is named for the large cross (Cruzeiro) that marks the site where the first mass was celebrated on May 3, 1957, during the city's construction. This event, led by Dom Fernando Gomes dos Santos, the Archbishop of Goiás, holds significant religious and historical importance for the city. Designed by urban planner Lúcio Costa as part of Brasília's original urban plan, the square served as a geodetic reference point for the city's layout. The cross itself is considered by some to be the true cornerstone of Brasília. While the initial wooden cross is now housed in the Catedral Nossa Senhora Aparecida, a replica stands in its place at the Praça do Cruzeiro.
