Discover more about Lajedo de Pai Mateus

Lajedo de Pai Mateus presents a captivating geological spectacle in the rural heart of Cabaceiras, Paraíba. This natural monument features a field of immense, rounded granite boulders, some weighing up to 45 tons, spread across a 1.5 square kilometer rock pavement. The area stands as one of only a few similar formations worldwide, with comparisons drawn to sites in Australia and Namibia. The origin of Lajedo de Pai Mateus dates back approximately 500 million years, with the granite formations sculpted by millions of years of erosion, temperature variations and wind. The Cariri Indians, who inhabited the region around 12,000 years ago, left their mark in the form of rock paintings found on some of the stones. In the 18th century, a hermit and healer known as Pai Mateus (Father Matthew) is said to have lived among the rocks, adding a layer of local legend to the site. Visitors can explore the 'Pedra do Capacete' (Helmet Stone), one of the most famous rock formations, and witness the stunning colors of the lichen-covered surfaces, which transform from grey and orange to red and blue with the changing light. The site is located on private property, within the Hotel Fazenda Pai Mateus, and guided tours are available. These tours not only guide visitors through the geological wonders but also share the rich history and folklore of the region.
