Discover more about Gruta do Janelão

Gruta do Janelão, located in the Cavernas do Peruaçu National Park in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is more than just a cave; it's a journey through geological history and prehistoric art. The cave, whose name translates to 'Big Window,' earns its moniker from the massive karst windows that allow sunlight to stream into its vast interior, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. As the first cave in the park developed for tourism, Gruta do Janelão stretches an impressive 4,740 meters in length with a vertical range of 176 meters. The Peruaçu River flows through the cave, adding to the spectacle. Skylights illuminate small forests within the cave, creating unique ecosystems. Visitors can explore the cave via the 'Caminho da Gruta do Janelão' loop trail, a 4.8 km walk that takes approximately 4 hours. Helmets are required due to the risk of falling rocks and water droplets from the 100-meter-high ceiling. The cave also features the Sítio Ateliê Janelão, where visitors can view well-preserved rock paintings in red, black, and ochre, depicting animals and geometric patterns created by prehistoric humans some 10,000 years ago. The cave's geology is characterized by its formation within the carbonate rocks of the Sete Lagoas Formation. The cave is at a point where the ceiling may collapse to form a gorge over thousands of years.
