History of Lagoa da Conceição

Indigenous Shores and Lagoon Routes

Long before the arrival of Portuguese settlers, the eastern side of Santa Catarina Island was used by Indigenous peoples, including Guarani groups whose movement and knowledge were closely connected to the coast, forests and waterways. The lagoon offered fish, shellfish and sheltered routes between the interior hills and the sea. Later maps and local place names preserved elements of this layered landscape, while archaeological evidence elsewhere around the island demonstrates the much older human occupation of its shores. Lagoa da Conceição’s geography therefore shaped settlement from the beginning: the water was not merely scenery but a source of food, transport and orientation.

Azorean Settlement and the Parish

Portuguese-Azorean families settled around the lagoon during the eighteenth century as the colonial administration encouraged permanent occupation of Santa Catarina Island. Small farms, fishing grounds and religious institutions developed around the village that became associated with Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The parish church, traditionally dated to the late eighteenth century, remains the clearest architectural reminder of this period. Azorean practices influenced local speech, foodways, religious festivals, fishing methods and domestic architecture, establishing cultural patterns that continued even as Florianópolis expanded beyond its historic centre.

Fishing, Farming and Waterborne Connections

For much of its history, Lagoa da Conceição was a rural and fishing settlement linked to other island communities by rough roads and the lagoon itself. Families combined small-scale cultivation with fishing and the collection of lagoon and coastal resources, while boats connected places that were difficult to reach overland. Communities such as Costa da Lagoa retained a particularly strong relationship with the water and forested slopes. The area’s relative distance from central Florianópolis helped preserve a local rhythm into the twentieth century, although improved roads gradually brought more goods, residents and visitors.

Leisure District and Changing Island Identity

From the later twentieth century onwards, better road access, beach tourism and the growth of Florianópolis transformed Lagoa da Conceição from a primarily rural community into a major leisure and residential district. Restaurants, bars, guesthouses, rental homes and watersports businesses appeared around the Centrinho and Avenida das Rendeiras, while new housing spread along the lagoon’s slopes and connecting roads. This development increased the neighbourhood’s visibility and economic opportunities but also placed pressure on traffic, infrastructure, waterways and traditional ways of life. Today, fishing, local religious heritage and long-established communities coexist with tourism, outdoor recreation and a substantial seasonal population.
