Praia do Santinho: Where Surf Meets Ancient History

Praia do Santinho, once known as Praia das Aranhas, is a captivating beach located in the northern part of Florianópolis, Brazil. The name 'Santinho' emerged in the 1970s, inspired by a rock carving resembling a saint, where fishermen once prayed for protection. Today, these carvings are recognized as ancient rock inscriptions dating back over 5,000 years, left by the Sambaqui people. These petroglyphs form one of the largest archaeological sites on the island.The beach itself stretches for 2.2 kilometers, offering a wide expanse of fine, white sand. Facing the open ocean to the east, Santinho is famous for its strong, consistent waves, making it a prime spot for surfing. The northern part of the beach transitions into extensive dune fields, adding to the scenic landscape. Trails like the Morro das Aranhas trail offer spectacular views of the coastline and surrounding islands.While retaining its natural charm and historical significance, Praia do Santinho also features modern amenities. The Costão do Santinho Resort, a large hotel complex built in 1985, provides a range of services and facilities. The resort is dedicated to preserving the local eco-archaeological heritage, maintaining an open-air museum showcasing the ancient rock art. Despite the resort, the beach has less infrastructure compared to its neighbors, emphasizing its commitment to eco-archaeological preservation.
