Praça General Tiburcio, commonly called Praça dos Leões, is a significant public square in Fortaleza, Ceará, with origins tracing back to the construction of the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário in 1730. Initially planned as "Largo do Palácio" in 1831, the square was officially inaugurated in 1856. After the death of General Antônio Tibúrcio Ferreira de Sousa in 1885, a statue was erected in his honor in 1888, marking the city's first public statue. The square is surrounded by historical buildings, including the Museu do Ceará, the Academia Cearense de Letras, and the Palácio da Luz. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, with its origins as a chapel built by enslaved people, adds to the square's historical and cultural significance. The square also features three statues of lions acquired from the Parisian foundry Val d'Osne, which contribute to its popular name, Praça dos Leões. These include a lion attacked by a serpent and two roaring lion statues. A statue of the writer Rachel de Queiroz sits on a bench in the square. Throughout its history, Praça General Tiburcio has been a focal point for significant events, including the deposition of Governor José Clarindo de Queirós in 1892 and the Popular Revolt of 1912. Today, the square is a vibrant hub where locals and tourists gather to enjoy the atmosphere, admire the monuments, and explore nearby shops and cafes.
