Praça da Sé: Fortaleza's Historic Heart

Praça da Sé, in the Centro district of Fortaleza, is a captivating square that serves as a central hub for locals and tourists alike. This historic space, initially conceived in the early plans of Fortaleza, has evolved into a vibrant center of culture and community. The square is framed by impressive architectural landmarks, most notably the Metropolitan Cathedral of Fortaleza. Designed by French architect George Maunier, the cathedral's eclectic style showcases neo-Gothic and Romanesque elements, drawing inspiration from the Cologne Cathedral and Chartres Cathedral. Construction of the cathedral began in 1938 and was completed in 1978; its towers reach 75 meters in height and the building can hold up to 5,000 people. Praça da Sé is a lively gathering place where visitors can immerse themselves in the city's atmosphere. Street performers and local artisans showcase their talents, while shaded benches offer a place to relax. The square also hosts social and cultural events throughout the year. The square's history dates back to 1726, when it was described as a public space in front of the Church of São José. Over time, it has been known as Praça do Conselho. Today, Praça da Sé stands as a testament to Fortaleza's colonial past, offering a blend of beauty, culture, and community spirit.
