The Catedral Metropolitana de Fortaleza, also known as the Cathedral of São José, is a significant architectural and spiritual landmark in the capital of Ceará. Construction began in 1938 and concluded in 1978, resulting in a magnificent structure that can accommodate up to 5,000 people. Designed by French architect George Mounier, the cathedral's architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany and Notre Dame in Paris. The cathedral stands on the site of the former Igreja da Sé, which was demolished in 1938 due to structural issues. The exterior of the Catedral Metropolitana features two impressive towers that reach a height of 75 meters. The interior is equally stunning, adorned with colorful stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes, creating an atmosphere of peace and serenity. Visitors can admire the intricate details of the altar, which was originally from Verona, Italy, and the high ceilings. The cathedral is located in the city center, near the Central Market, making it easily accessible. It serves as the main Catholic church in Fortaleza and hosts religious ceremonies and events. Visitors can attend mass on Sundays. The cathedral also has two chapels dedicated to important local saints: Saint Joseph, the patron saint of Ceará, and Our Lady of the Assumption.
