Fundação Museu do Mar: A Dive into Maritime History

The Fundação Museu de História, Pesquisa e Arqueologia do Mar, also known as Fundação Mar, is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the maritime history of the São Paulo coastline. Founded in 1991 by a group of divers and enthusiasts, the museum emerged from a desire to continue research and document the approximately 30 known shipwrecks in the North Coast region of the State of São Paulo. The museum's collection includes artifacts recovered from shipwrecks, exhibits on marine biology, and displays about the history of navigation. Visitors can explore the stories of sunken vessels, learn about the diverse marine life of the region, and discover the tools and techniques used by sailors throughout history. The Fundação Mar also offers educational programs and workshops, aiming to raise awareness about marine conservation and the importance of preserving maritime heritage. The museum is located in Praia Grande, São Sebastião, in a new building that opened after being closed for five years. The new facilities include a marine biology and shipwreck museum, a permanent exhibition of navigation equipment, and rooms for environmental and cultural film screenings. The Fundação Mar also has partnerships with the University of São Paulo (USP) to offer guided land and underwater trails.
