Discover more about Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres de Paranaguá

The Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres de Paranaguá, also known as Fortaleza da Barra, is located on Fortaleza Beach, at the foot of Morro da Baleia (now Fortaleza Hill), on Ilha do Mel. This historical fortress was built between 1767 and 1769 by order of D. Luís António de Sousa Botelho Mourão, captain-general of the Capitania de São Paulo, under orders from the Marquês de Pombal, to reinforce the defense of the southern region of the colony. Overlooking the entrance to Paranaguá Bay, the fortress strategically defended the former village of Paranaguá, ensuring the safety of its harbor. From here, gold, wood, and later, erva-mate extracted from the region were shipped, protecting it from privateers and the Spanish who frequented that stretch of coastline. Visitors can explore the well-preserved fortified walls and cannons, and visit the small museum inside, which showcases the fortress's history and artifacts. The site offers panoramic views of the city and coast. The fortress is accessible via a 4 km walk on the beach from Nova Brasília, or via a trail through the Atlantic Forest.
