Discover more about Trilha dos Tucanos

Trilha dos Tucanos, or Toucan's Trail, is a privately owned and operated bird reserve located just outside the rural town of Tapiraí, São Paulo. Situated within a critically important fragment of the Atlantic rainforest, the reserve encompasses approximately 70 hectares of diverse habitats, including dense rainforest, a small lake, streams, waterfalls, and hilly terrain. The reserve began in 2014 when Marco Antonio Neumann, the owner, was encouraged by naturalist Tomas de Aquino Singrist to develop an ecotourist lodge and bird reserve. Today, Trilha dos Tucanos is home to over 300 species of birds, some of which are rare and endangered. The reserve features numerous trails that wind through the rainforest, allowing visitors to easily observe different bird species on foot or from within strategically placed bird hides. Many birds have become habituated to human presence and can be seen visiting the tables of the reserve's charming cafe. Birdwatchers can spot remarkable species such as the green-headed tanager, royal flycatcher, and several toucan species, including the red-breasted toucan, spot-billed toucanet, and the endangered saffron toucanet. Other animals such as puma, ocelot and tapir have been recorded in the area. The reserve provides a vital sanctuary for these creatures within the fragmented Atlantic Forest.
