Discover more about Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

The Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, also known as the Cathedral of Brasilia, stands as one of the most iconic and expressive structures in Brazil's capital. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, it is dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the Patron Saint of Brazil and Brasília. The cathedral is located on the Esplanada dos Ministérios and is a প্রধান cultural and spiritual landmark. Construction began on September 12, 1958, with the laying of the cornerstone, and the structure was completed in 1960. The cathedral was officially inaugurated on May 31, 1970, featuring transparent external glass. Joaquim Cardozo was the structural engineer who made Niemeyer's vision a reality. The design features a hyperboloid structure comprising 16 concrete columns that reach skyward. These columns, each weighing 90 tons and measuring 42 meters high, create an awe-inspiring visual effect, symbolizing hands in prayer. Inside, the nave is a circular space 70 meters in diameter, capable of holding up to 4,000 worshipers. Suspended within the nave are sculptures of three angels, crafted by Alfredo Ceschiatti, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. The interior is illuminated by stained glass windows designed by Marianne Peretti, which cast colorful patterns across the marble floor and walls. The baptistery, with its egg-shaped form, features ceramic tiles painted by Athos Bulcão in 1977. The bell tower, donated by Spain, houses four large bells, completing the architectural ensemble. Visitors can explore the Access Square, which features bronze sculptures of the Four Evangelists by Alfredo Ceschiatti. The cathedral's design emphasizes light and space, creating a serene environment for reflection and contemplation. The dark tunnel leading to the nave provides a contrasting experience, enhancing the impact of the light-filled interior.
