Overview
The Memorial JK is a striking monument dedicated to Juscelino Kubitschek (JK), the former president of Brazil who founded Brasília. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 1981, the memorial is both a mausoleum and a museum, offering insights into Kubitschek's life, work, and vision for Brazil. The building itself is a modernist masterpiece, featuring a truncated pyramid shape covered in white marble and a concrete dome. A 28-meter high pedestal supports a statue of Kubitschek by Honório Peçanha. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits displaying Kubitschek's personal belongings, photographs, medals, and documents related to the construction of Brasília. Highlights include a reproduction of his library, the presidential sash, and his tomb, which is adorned with stained glass by Marianne Peretti. A 1973 Ford Galaxie LTD, the last car used by Kubitschek, is also on display. The memorial also serves as a cultural center, hosting events and musical performances. The surrounding gardens, designed by Burle Marx, provide a serene space for reflection. The Memorial JK is not only a tribute to a significant figure in Brazilian history but also a symbol of the country's modern architectural heritage.
