Praça do Derby: A Historical and Verdant Oasis in Recife

Praça do Derby is a prominent public space in Recife, Brazil, recognized as a historical garden and a part of the city's cultural heritage. Constructed in 1925, the square was envisioned as a recreational park, featuring two large green blocks bordering the Avenida Governador Agamenon Magalhães. The project reflected the modern urban planning ideas of the time, emphasizing both sanitation and decoration. In the 1930s, the renowned landscape architect Burle Marx remodeled the Praça do Derby, integrating elements of French Baroque design with the organic lines of English Romanticism. Marx respected the existing layout, equipment, and vegetation while adding his signature touch through the rearrangement of tree groupings and the introduction of diverse palm species brought from the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden. He also incorporated flowerbeds with native and exotic shrubs, enhancing the natural feel of the space. Throughout its history, Praça do Derby has served as a focal point for the community. It is one of the largest public transport interchanges in Recife, with numerous bus lines converging at the square. The square also features monuments, including the Monument to the Fallen Soldier in the Fulfillment of Duty, created by Jobson Figueiredo in 1986. Visitors can enjoy winding paths, a playground, a bandstand, an orchid house, a lake with a fountain, and a central island known as the Island of Lovers.
