Discover more about Capela Dourada

The Capela Dourada, also known as the Chapel of the Novices, is a resplendent jewel of Brazilian Baroque architecture located in the heart of Recife. As part of the Convent and Church of Santo Antônio complex, this chapel offers visitors an immersive glimpse into the artistic opulence and religious fervor of colonial Brazil. Construction of the Capela Dourada began in 1696 and was completed in 1724. The chapel's construction was commissioned by the Brothers of the Venerable Third Order of St. Francis of the Chagas, a brotherhood of wealthy merchants in Recife. These merchants sought to create a chapel for the Order's novices, sparing no expense in its decoration. The result is a breathtaking interior where nearly every surface is covered in intricately carved cedar wood, coated with thin layers of 22-carat gold leaf. The chapel's name, meaning "Golden Chapel" in Portuguese, is derived from the immense quantity of gold used in its decoration. The lavish use of gold reflects the economic prosperity of Pernambuco during the 17th and 18th centuries, when the region was a major producer of sugarcane. The walls, ceilings, altars, and even the window frames are covered in gilded carvings, creating a dazzling spectacle of light and shadow. The Capela Dourada's interior also features a series of azulejo tile panels, smaller altars with notable statues, and dozens of painted panels depicting saints and personifications of virtues. The main chapel features a large crucifix flanked by images of São Cosme and São Damião. The sacristy, accessed after touring the chapel, contains furniture from 1762 made of rosewood, a marble table, and a washbasin imported from Estremoz, Portugal. The chapel stands as a testament to the skill and artistry of the numerous artists and craftsmen who contributed to its creation. The ceiling, arches, and main chapel are attributed to Luís Machado, while Antônio Martins Santiago crafted the main chapel. The paintings and gilding were executed by artists such as João Vital Correia, Manuel de Jesus Pinto and José Ribeiro de Vasconcelos.
