Discover more about Cidade das Artes

The Cidade das Artes (City of Arts) is a cultural complex in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in 2013. Originally planned as the Cidade da Música (City of Music), the complex has become one of the most important and complete spaces for the arts in Rio de Janeiro. The building itself is an architectural marvel, situated between the sea and the mountains. It's designed as a little city within a larger structure, elevated on a vast terrace ten meters above the ground. This terrace serves as a public space and gathering place, providing access to all the facilities. The design pays homage to Brazilian architecture, resembling a large house or veranda overlooking the city. Inside, the Cidade das Artes hosts a variety of venues, including a concert hall with a convertible design for opera and theater, a chamber music hall, movie theaters, dance studios, rehearsal rooms, exhibition spaces, restaurants, and a media library. The concert hall is one of the largest in Brazil, with a capacity of up to 1,222 seats. The complex also includes a chamber theater with 437 seats and an electroacoustic room for 100 people. The Cidade das Artes hosts a diverse program of events, including music, theater, dance, visual arts, and educational activities. It is home to the Brazilian Symphonic Orchestra and has become a cultural reference point in Rio de Janeiro.
