Discover more about Praça Varnhagem - Tijuca

Praça Varnhagen, situated in the Tijuca neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro's Zona Norte (North Zone), is more than just a public square; it's a dynamic hub of culinary experiences and local history. The square is named in honor of Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, Visconde de Porto Seguro, an important figure in Brazilian history as a military officer, diplomat, and historian. In the 1990s, Praça Varnhagen was known as 'Praça dos Passarinhos' (Bird Square) due to the bird trade that occurred there on weekends. However, the bird market was relocated to the vicinity of the São Francisco Xavier subway station. Since the 2000s, the area around the square has become a well-known gastronomic center in the greater Tijuca area, with numerous bars, botecos (informal bars), nightclubs, and restaurants. The intense nightlife, especially on weekends, contributes to the square's lively atmosphere. In 2016, a large underground reservoir was built under the square to prevent flooding in the Tijuca area. This reservoir, known as a 'piscinão' (big pool), can store up to 43 million liters of rainwater, helping to manage storm runoff and reduce the risk of floods. The reservoir is equipped with pumps and a control room to manage the water flow from the Maracanã River. Today, Praça Varnhagen is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a taste of Tijuca's vibrant culture and culinary scene. It serves as a meeting point, a place to relax, and a destination for those seeking good food and lively entertainment.
