However, the bird market was relocated to the vicinity of the São Francisco Xavier subway station. The intense nightlife, especially on weekends, contributes to the square's lively atmosphere.In 2016, a large underground reservoir was built under the square to prevent flooding in the Tijuca area. This reservoir, known as a 'piscinão' (big pool), can store up to 43 million liters of rainwater, helping to manage storm runoff and reduce the risk of floods.
