However, the bird market was relocated to the vicinity of the São Francisco Xavier subway station. Since the 2000s, the area around the square has become a well-known gastronomic center in the greater Tijuca area, with numerous bars, botecos (informal bars), nightclubs, and restaurants. The intense nightlife, especially on weekends, contributes to the square's lively atmosphere.In 2016, a large underground reservoir was built under the square to prevent flooding in the Tijuca area. This reservoir, known as a 'piscinão' (big pool), can store up to 43 million liters of rainwater, helping to manage storm runoff and reduce the risk of floods.
