Discover more about Municipal Cultural Center Laurinda Santos Lobo

The Laurinda Santos Lobo Municipal Cultural Center, affectionately known as "O Laurinda," is nestled in the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, Rio de Janeiro. This cultural hub occupies a beautiful mansion built in 1907 for the Baroness of Parina, later owned by General Pinheiro Machado, who gifted it to Senator Joaquim Lima Pires Ferreira. Though Laurinda Santos Lobo never resided here, the center bears her name to honor her significant contributions to the arts. A prominent figure during Rio's Belle Époque, Laurinda was a patron of the arts who hosted gatherings for intellectuals and artists, including composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and dancer Isadora Duncan. Established in 1979, the center continues Laurinda's legacy by providing a space for artistic expression and community engagement. Following restoration work, it reopened in December 2024 with the exhibition “Amor: (des)construção dos afetos em Laurinda Santos Lobo,” showcasing over 50 local artists. Visitors can explore art exhibitions, attend dance and music workshops, enjoy theatrical performances, and participate in children's activities. The center also hosts outdoor events in its gardens. The center is more than just a venue; it's a place where local art groups can exhibit their work and develop their craft. The "Recepção" project, initiated in 2009, has enabled over 100 artistic groups to rehearse and experiment on the center's grounds. "O Laurinda" stands as a testament to Santa Teresa's rich cultural heritage and its ongoing commitment to fostering creativity.
