Discover more about Museu Histórico da Cidade

The Museu Histórico da Cidade provides a deep dive into the story of Rio de Janeiro, from its foundation to its modern transformations. The museum is located within the Parque da Cidade, a municipal natural park in the Gávea neighborhood spanning 470,000 square meters. The architectural complex includes two 19th-century buildings dedicated to long and short-term exhibitions, the São João Batista Chapel from the 20th century, a technical reserve, and an administrative building. The museum's collection includes works from different periods of the city's history, such as photographs by Marc Ferrez and Augusto Malta, engravings by Debret and Maria Graham, and sculptures by Mestre Valentim. Visitors can also explore urban projects, such as the Avenida Central project. The Museu Histórico da Cidade aims to preserve the memory of Rio de Janeiro through its collection and serve as a reference point for discussing the cultural, social, economic, and material transformations of the city. The museum was created in 1934 by decree, during the administration of Mayor Pedro Ernesto. The idea of a museum about Rio de Janeiro, however, emerged in the early years of the Republic. In 1891, Municipal Superintendent Alfredo Piragibe requested that the Senate and the Municipal Chamber send objects and works of art to form the collection of a museum about the history of the city. The MHC had its headquarters in the City Palace and in the Cardeal Arcoverde Square. In 2010, the museum closed for restoration and reopened in May 2021.
