Fundação Pierre Verger: A Cultural Window into Afro-Brazilian Heritage

The Fundação Pierre Verger, located in the Engenho Velho de Brotas neighborhood of Salvador, Bahia, is a cultural institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Pierre Verger (1902-1996), a French photographer, ethnographer, and self-taught anthropologist. Verger, also known as Fatumbi, dedicated his life to studying the African diaspora, particularly the cultural and religious connections between Brazil and West Africa. Established in the same house where Verger lived for many years, the foundation safeguards his vast collection of over 62,000 photographic negatives, books, articles, sound recordings, films, documents, and objects gathered over decades of research and travel. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing Verger's photographs, which sensitively capture Bahian culture and the African diaspora. Guided tours offer a more intimate experience, allowing visitors to view Verger's personal library, bedroom, and photographic collection. The foundation also serves as a cultural center, hosting workshops, lectures, and events that promote Afro-Brazilian culture and provide educational opportunities for the local community. These include workshops in capoeira, visual arts, and body expression, as well as a library named after the famous Bahian writer Jorge Amado.
